Summer Law Institute
For the past five summers, the CUNY School of Law has offered the Summer Law
Institute, a three-week introduction to law school study, to 60 entering
students. The Institute is designed for students who could benefit from a more
intensive academic orientation to legal education than is available through the
regular Pre-law Orientation program (for example, students who have been out of
school for more than three years, students whose undergraduate education did not
involve a significant amount analytic reading and writing, or students who
traditionally underperform on standardized tests). Taught by full-time Law
School faculty, the Institute addresses three major areas: academics, study
skills, and the "culture" of law school. Through demonstration classes, group
discussions, and extensive practice with individual feedback, students in the
Institute are exposed to the range of experiences they can expect during the
first year of law school. Selected prior participants in the Summer Law
Institute act as teaching assistants the following year.
Summer Session
CUNY School of Law Students
The Law School offers a summer session for returning students in June and
July. It is designed to permit students to decrease the pressure in their second
year, or to allow more time for clinic in the third, as well as to permit a
variety of useful course offerings for students from other law schools.
Offerings vary from year to year. The 2008 Summer Session offerings include
Basic Mediation Training, Criminal Procedure, Child Advocacy, New York
Domestic Relations Law, Public Interest/Public Service (Internship Course), and Small Firm Practice.
The maximum number of credits that can be taken in the summer program is six.
Most of the classes are held at the Law School two nights a week on Monday
through Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 9:15 p.m for eight weeks two evening courses are held in Manhattan. Fundamentals of Basic Mediation Theory &
Practice is held here for one week Monday - Thursday from 9 a.m. - 5:15 p.m. For more, read our Summer 2008 Information Materials and Course Descriptions.
