The IWHR grants were initiated in 2011 to assist CUNY students gain valuable on the ground experience over the summer to better prepare them for careers in international human rights. Grant recipients work with well-respected human rights NGOs and IWHR partner organizations.

The grants are funded through donations made to the Copelon Fund for IWHR, in honor of Professor Rhonda Copelon, the clinic's founder. In the past, grant recipients have worked for Women's Link Worldwide (Bogota, Colombia and Madrid, Spain); the Center for Reproductive Rights (Katmandu, Nepal); Legal Aid, Trafficking Victims Legal Defense and Advocacy Project (NY); Madre (NY); and the Centre for Civil and Political Rights/UN Human Rights Committee Members (Geneva, Switzerland).
