Crimes Against Identity: Hate Crimes and the Latino/a LGBTQ Community

Join CLORE at CUNY School of Law for a discussion of issues arising from hate violence directed at Latino/a members of the LGBTQ community and the intersection of race, national origin, ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Refreshments will be served.

"Promotes economic justice, equity and opportunity for all New Yorkers through community and electoral organizing, strategic policy advocacy, leadership development, youth and adult education, and high quality legal and support services."
Jenny Rivera (Moderator), Director, Center on Latino and Latina Rights and Equality (CLORE) "The Center on Latino and Latina Rights and Equality (CLORE) focuses on issues impacting the Latino community in the United States, with the goal of developing progressive strategies for legal reform. The Center seeks to educate lawyers, law students, scholars and the general public on the status of Latinos and Latinas, as well as to advocate for expanded civil rights in the areas that affect the growing Latino population."
The event is co-sponsored by the American Constitution Society, Asian Pacific American Law Students Association, Black Law Students Association, Courtroom Advocacy Project, CUNY Community Now, Domestic Violence Coalition, Latin American Law Students Association, Law Students for Reproductive Choice, and Outlaws.

On August 8, 2009, history was made when Sonia Sotomayor was sworn in as the U.S. Supreme Court's first Latina/o Justice and the third woman to serve on the Court.
Professor Jenny Rivera, Director of CUNY Law School's Center on Latino and Latina Rights and Equality (CLORE) and former law clerk to then District Judge Sonia Sotomayor, who attended the historic confirmation hearings, will speak to Justice Sotomayor's journey to the U.S. Supreme Court, diversity in the legal profession, and how we can help redefine the justice system in modern times to be more reflective of the people it represents.
