Cultural and Lingual Competence
|
We draw on the rich resources of our culturally diverse faculty, student body
and staff to teach students how to represent clients and communities in ways
that respect the cultural heritage and languages of clients. We explore the role
that ethnicity, culture and language play in the attorney-client relationship
and in designing effective strategies for successfully helping clients solve
problems. To this end, we utilize a variety of approaches to build
cross-cultural, cross-lingual competence by:
- Teaching the Five Habits of Cross-Cultural Lawyering developed by
CUNY Professor Susan Bryant and Yale Clinical Professor Jean Koh Peters
- Training all students to work with interpreters
- Offering a mini-course in Spanish for lawyers
- Exploring how issues of race and privilege shape representation
