The Office of Student Affairs oversees registered student organizations. Charles Johnson, Director of Student Activities (718) 340-4204, assists student organizations with event planning and activities.
CUNY School of Law student organizations cover many areas of interests, but students are encouraged to form and register new organizations if a specific interest or mission is not reflected in any of the existing organizations.
AGAPE Christian
Fellowship
This group explores how
Christian values foster social justice. The group supports spiritual growth
through the study of the Bible and Christian tradition.
Advocates for Students with Kids
This organization was formed to address the issues Law School
students face in balancing child care and school. ASK works to ensure
comprehensive child care at CUNY Law to include children under 2.3 years of
age. CUNY Law prides itself on being an innovative law school and one of the
first to offer on-site child care. ASK seeks to ensure that CUNY continues to
implement groundbreaking policy changes to accommodate the needs of its
students and the modern family.
American Bar
Association Law Student Division
This is a national
organization that provides students invaluable inside information into the
field of lawyering. Among many other benefits, there are excellent
opportunities for networking and leadership positions in over 600 different
legal areas.
American Constitution
Society
The CUNY Chapter works
to ensure that the fundamental principles of human dignity, individual rights
and liberties, genuine equality, and access to justice are in their rightful,
central place in American law. ACS is one of the nation's leading progressive
legal organizations.
Asian Pacific American
Law Students Association
This organization strives
to promote a greater understanding of Asian-Pacific American legal issues
affecting our diverse communities and cultures by serving as a vehicle for
political activity and by providing thorough academic support for future Asian
Pacific American lawyers. APALSA is a co-sponsor of a student-organized pre-law
workshop for incoming students.
Black Law Students
Association
The purposes of this
group are to ensure its members successful completion of law school by
providing mentors, study sessions and counseling; sponsoring conferences,
workshops, lectures and networking activities; and providing help in finding
summer and full-time employment. BLSA is part of National BLSA and co-sponsors
a student-organized pre-law workshop for incoming students.
Criminal Law Society
This organization is
devoted to increasing awareness among CUNY School of Law around issues facing
criminal defendants and victims in the community, as well as engaging in direct
advocacy of partnerships and residents in the surrounding neighborhood.
CUNY ACLU
This group engages students of
the CUNY Law community with activities and panel creating awareness for the
pressing need to protect civil rights and liberties.
CUNY Contemplative
Urban Law Program
This program pushes the
boundaries of the legal profession past adversarial relationships through
self-sustaining and collaborative practices such as non-violent communication,
active listening, and stress management through meditation and yoga.
CUNY Labor Coalition
for Workers Rights and Economic Justice
This organization is
dedicated to preventing and combating domestic violence, while supporting and
advocating for survivors of domestic violence.
CUNY Law Justice
This is the Law School's
basketball team. The team plays organized games in the metropolitan area Law
League and coordinates scrimmages and special games involving CUNY staff and
faculty.

The Domestic Violence
Coalition is dedicated to preventing and combating domestic violence, while
supporting and advocating for survivors of domestic violence.
Indigenous Peoples Law
Student’s Association
This association is comprised
of law students dedicated to numerous worthwhile tasks, first among them
creating an academically rich and welcoming environment for law students of
indigenous heritage and background. Incorporating Indigenous peoples’ various
experiences and perspectives into the theory and practice of law is an
important part of our work.
Inter-American
Comparative Law Association - Cuba Delegation
This group sends law
students to Cuba each summer
to study the similarities and differences between U.S. and Cuban law.
International Law
Organization
The goal of this
organization is to increase awareness and understanding of international law, and
to educate the CUNY community about recent advances and conduct legal research.
The organization monitors and researches developments in this area and sponsors
speakers, films and other information forums. ILO is the CUNY chapter of the
International Law Students Association.
Irish Law Students
Association
This group promotes
Irish heritage, culture, intercultural relations and knowledge of contemporary
Irish politics. ILSA sponsors the annual St. Patrick s Day luncheon as a
principal way to fund its Joseph Doherty Civil Rights Fellowship for CUNY law
students. ILSA is committed to human rights and has regularly invited renowned
guest speakers to speak. ILSA’s primary objective is to raise awareness of
human rights, political rights, and civil rights struggles around the world.
Jewish Law Students
Association
This association provides
a forum for students to discuss a wide range of issues of particular concern to
Jewish law students, including professional, political, religious, and social
issues. Activities have included holiday discussions, speakers on the Israeli
political system, and informal parties.
Justice Basketball
This organization promote the
CUNY community by providing an outlet for students to participate in and
represent CUNY Law in a citywide basketball league that is created for lawyers
and law students.
Latin American Law
Students Association
This group sponsors
academic, cultural, social, and community service activities to strengthen the
presence of Latinos in the legal profession. LALSA serves as a liaison between
its members and the administration, the student body, alumni, and professionals
in the field. LALSA also works to increase the number of Latin American
students at CUNY and to ensure that students receive support to achieve
academic and professional success. LALSA is a co-sponsor of a student-organized
pre-law workshop for incoming students.
Law Labor Coalition
This group aims to provide CUNY
Law students with organized opportunities to raise and address labor-related
issues. By coordinating grassroots activism and addressing global issues
developments in labor through educational events.
LEAP (Law Equality and
Policy)
This organization serves
to provide an opportunity for future lawyers and leaders to affect positive
change in the social, judicial, political and economic policies that shape our
nation and the world. The mission is grounded in three main ideas -- that
policy should be based on values of human dignity and respect; that policy
reflects an interaction between people and their environments; and that the
role of future lawyers and leaders is critical in how policies shape the world.
Mississippi Project
This extracurricular
group organizes a trip to Mississippi
for students to aid in the continuing struggle against oppressive conditions
faced by marginalized groups in the state’s workplaces and courtrooms. Past
delegations have worked on legal issues ranging from Title VII claims to worker
compensation laws. CUNY students working with the Innocence Project spend
approximately two weeks investigating claims of wrongful conviction for
individuals incarcerated in Mississippi.
Moot Court
This activity helps
students gain written and oral advocacy skills. These skills include
researching, brief writing, public speaking, and teamwork. Competitions provide
for one-on-one feedback and support from faculty, as well as the opportunity to
develop confidence and crucial trial and appellate practice skills.
Muslim Law Students
Association
This organization promotes
the accurate understanding of the Muslim faith and Islam to the legal field; in
doing so they hope to redress the misconceptions promoted in media and our
social arena.
National Lawyers
Guild
The CUNY Chapter follows
NLG’s mission that human rights shall be regarded as more sacred than property
interests. The chapter conducts Street Law Trainings; organizes legal observer
trainings, voter registration and Fair Trade Coffee campaigns; and schedules
panel discussions on various issues ranging from anti-death penalty and prison
reform to environmental activism. Street law is a student-run program that aims
to empower disenfranchised community members through brief exposure to criminal
procedure.
New York City Law Review
This is a student-run
publication that seeks to publish the best of legal scholarship from all points
of view on various legal topics within the broad framework of the Law School
s mission. NYCLR also serves to enhance the legal education of its members,
while providing a meaningful forum for the exchange of ideas.
OUTLaws
OutLaws is the
association for GLBT, PWA, HIV+ communities and their allies, bringing social,
educational, political and cultural events to the law school. The organization
aims to enhance the diversity of legal education at CUNY by providing a safe
space for all students, staff and faculty to discuss social, legal and extra-legal
issues involving people who are HIV+, living with AIDS, gay men, lesbians,
bisexuals, transgendered and other sexual minorities.
Phi Alpha Delta
This is a professional
legal fraternity that publishes The
Reporter quarterly and holds a biennial conference. Phi Alpha Delta serves
as a conduit for meeting other law school students, attorneys, and judges who
are members of the fraternity.
Public Interest Law
Association
This is a
student-directed organization that promotes the participation of public
interest forums and public interest legal work through fundraising activities,
including the annual PILA auction (a social highlight of the year). PILA funds
student summer public interest internships.
Reproductive Justice
This group strives to educate, organize and support
law students to ensure tha a new generation of advocates will be prepared to
protect and expand reproductive rights as basic civil and human rights.
South Asian Law
Student Association
This organization aims to mobilize CUNY Law students
for the purposes of community organizing and outreach, academic achievement,
career opportunities and the celebration of South Asian culture.
Sports and
Entertainment Law Society's
The purpose of this
group is to prepare law students to represent artists and athletes from
underprivileged communities as they develop careers in the entertainment
industry.
Student Government
This is an independent
mechanism for unified student action and a voice for academic, government,
political, and social concerns.
Students 4 Students
This is a coalition of CUNY Law students dedicated to peer-to-peer
support and greater dialogue about academic concerns within the CUNY Community. Our goal is to advocate on behalf of the
entire student body to implement a more progressive academic policy, one that
meets our bar passage requirements while staying true to our mission of “law in
the service of human needs.”
