Professor Rossein, Lilly Ledbetter to Speak at the John Howard Lecture on Law and Justice

September 10, 2009

Professor Rick Rossein will speak at the Fourth Annual John Howard Lecture on Law and Justice at SUNY Purchase on September 30th. Joining him as a speaker will be Lilly Ledbetter, the plaintiff in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, the landmark Supreme Court case on pay discrimination. In Ledbetter v. Goodyear, the Court ruled that under Title VII employees can only sue charging pay discrimination within 180 days of when the payroll decision was made.

Professor Rossein, author of Employment Discrimination Law and Litigation, and a nationally recognized expert on workplace discrimination, including gender discrimination, will discuss the Ledbetter case and its implications for workers' rights. He will also discuss the role Congress can play in legislating changes that affect workplace lawsuits. Notably, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 was the first bill signed by President Obama when he took office in January, 2009. The bill amends the Civil Rights Act of 1964 stating that the 180-day statute of limitations resets with each discriminatory paycheck.
