SUMMARY:2024 Haywood Burns Contemplative Social Justice Law Retreat
DESCRIPTION:About the Retreat\nFor more than 20 years\, a community of staff\, students\, faculty\, and alumni have gathered at this annual treat to sit with the weight of social justice lawyering. \nTaking a moment to pause and center yourself is vital for all of us\, especially for those engaged in the study and practice of social justice law. This year’s retreat takes place on March 22-March 24\, 2024 and will be held at the Blue Cliff Monastery in Pine Bush\, New York. \nFor those of you who have attended\, you know how valuable this 3-day break is to recalibrate and refocus in community. We want to share this reflective practice and remove financial obstacles for students who’d like to join. In the past\, the generosity of the alumni community has meant that student fees have been fully covered!  We are hoping to do this again for the 2024 Spring Retreat. \nPlease consider making a contribution to cover student costs. \nRegistration\nCapacity is limited\, so please ensure you can attend if you register for this event. \nStudents can register here\, at no cost. \nAll other community members can register here.

SUMMARY:2024 Hayward Burns Contemplative Social Justice Retreat: The Revolution Starts Within
DESCRIPTION:For over 20 years\, a small community of staff\, students\, faculty\, and alumni have gathered at this annual retreat to sit with the weight of social justice lawyering. Taking a moment to pause and center yourself is vital for all of us\, especially for those engaged in the study and practice of social justice law. \nThis year’s retreat takes place on March 22-24\, 2024\, and will be held at the Blue Cliff Monastery in Pine Bush\, New York. \nThis year’s theme is: The Revolution Starts Within. We all benefit from honing our inner strength\, to make sure our actions and communications are grounded in our highest alignment with Self. Space is limited this year so we are prioritizing direct CUNY Law folks\, and we will let registrants know if we have additional space for including family members. \nAlumni are fundraising to ensure that finances will not impede any student from attending. If you would like to donate\, go to our GiveGab page. \nStudents register here\, paying as you can $0-$100. \nFaculty\, staff\, and alumni all register directly on the Blue Cliff Monastery website retreat registration page and select the specific CUNY Law Retreat. Cost is $140-$240. \nIf you have any questions\, email Alizabeth Newman.

SUMMARY:Burns Chair Events: Resistance to Autocracy During the Trump Administration
DESCRIPTION:Richard Abel\, Professor Emeritus at UCLA and 2007 Burns Chair\, will discuss resistance to autocracy during the Trump administration. \nPlease join us as Prof. Richard Abel\, Connell Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus at UCLA and 2007 Burns Chair at CUNY Law\, discusses his three new books on resistance to autocracy during the Trump administration. During his four years as president\, Trump violated the most basic precepts of liberal democracy: seeking to overturn elections\, issuing illegal executive orders against immigrants\, corrupting the criminal justice system to protect his cronies\, and undercutting the efforts of scientific experts to control the Covid-19 pandemic. Prof. Abel’s talk\, introduced by current Burns Chair\, Vince Warren\, will discuss these abuses\, and importantly\, the forms of resistance they provoked. \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Contemplative Practice and Social Justice: Honoring MLK Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Founding faculty of the CUNY Law Contemplative program\, Family Court Judge and former CUNY Law Prof. Maria Arias\, and Dharma teacher Jeanne Anselmo\, will be co-hosting an event Thursday evening April 4\, memorializing the anniversary of the assassination of MLK Jr. \nWe will be participating in a contemplative group reading of Letters from a Birmingham Jail\, written by MLK from jail to his many supposed supporter who were telling him that now is not the time to act. His eloquent and tempered response was smuggled out of the jail in pieces and is a powerful message that a shift in power is never convenient. \nThe event will use a beautiful process called Lectio Divina (Latin for “Divine Reading”) a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading\, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with the devine and to increase the knowledge of spirituality. \nThe event will be in-person at the law school and will have a zoom link for those who cannot attend in person.
