SUMMARY:DEI Campus Climate Program - "Global Dimensions of Religious Bias"
DESCRIPTION:“Global Dimensions of Religious Bias” \nProfessor David Mednicoff\, Chair of the Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst\, will explore how  patterns of prejudice against religious groups\, such as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia\, are often analyzed at the national level and in terms of nation-specific politics and law. Yet the nature and spread of bias against minority religious groups in one society are affected by global political forces and groups in significant ways. This talk looks at global political drivers of anti-Semitism in the US as an example of the transnational nature of prejudice in today’s world. \n\n\n\nFood and refreshments will be provided for those that attend the entire program.

SUMMARY:Financial Planning for Lawyers - Alumni Networking and CLE Event
DESCRIPTION:Financial Planning for Lawyers \nWhile everyone understands the importance of financial planning\, most presentations are centered around retirement planning. However\, attorneys have other concerns. Right out of the gate\, they are burdened with significant student loan debt. While their income will rise\, so will their taxes. As a result\, their children are less likely to qualify for financial aid\, so they must weigh their retirement against their kids’ education. Depending on their comp structure\, salary may be dispersed at the end of the year making budgeting difficult to plan for. This seminar will include these topics: \n\n\n\nRetirement Planning Strategies\nPlanning for aging parents & families\nTax Reduction Strategies\nStudent loan repayment strategies\nEstate Planning Strategies\nBudgeting\n\n\n\nJoin us for this FREE evening event; networking with CUNY Law alums from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM followed by the CLE program from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM. Afterward\, stay and mingle until 8:00 PM.  Light food and beverages will be served. \nThis in-person event is open to CUNY School of Law alumni. Registration is required. \nApproved for 1.0 NJ CLE credits\, 1.0 NY CLE credits (Approved Jurisdiction Policy)\nPRESENTED and CO-SPONSORED BY: Niraj Chhabra\, MBA\, CFP®\, CLTC®\, SideBar Advisors\, LLC\nMODERATED BY: Angela Torregoza ’12\, Founder\, Torregoza Legal PLLC \n  \n \n  \nRSVP

SUMMARY:Interrogating AAPI Identities: Intersectional Scholarship\, Organizing\, and Transformative Solidarities
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 17\, 2024 | 9:30am to 4pm \nCUNY School of Law\n2 Court Square\, Long Island City\, NY 11101 \nRSVP: Register \n  \nCoined in 1968\, “Asian American” captures a vast and heterogenous racialized group that includes diverse ethnicities\, religions\, and cultures. The addition of “Pacific Islander” recognizes shared sociopolitical\, historical\, and phenotypic similarities among those who fall under the category\, AAPI. The communities that encompass this racialized label include immigrants to the U.S. with origins from South (e.g. India\, Bangladeshi\, Pakistani); Southeast (e.g. Vietnam\, Thailand\, Cambodia); and East (e.g. Korea\, Japan\, China) Asia; and also include members from broader Asian diasporic communities (e.g. Indo-Caribbean\, Japanese-Peruvian\, Chinese-Mexican)\, as well as those who are indigenous to the Americas (e.g. Native Hawai’ian\, Samoan\, Saipanese); become Americans through international adoption from Asian countries; or are mixed race. \nWhat is AAPI? There are differences among separate communities\, but there are also similarities that bind us as a people. In recent years\, differences\, including religions\, political ideology\, color\, class\, and citizenship status among Asian Americans in the United States and Asia have created notable fissures. It is thus ever timely for scholarly and community-based interventions to help us revisit the questions of who are Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders; the complicated sociohistory and current iteration of AAPI studies; and broad concerns that affect “AAPIs” as a racialized entity. Because CUNY is in New York City\, home to the most diverse AAPI population in the U.S.\, we are well-situated to not only examine but critically interrogate what it means to be AAPI\, and the separate identities that comprise this larger umbrella identity. As a whole\, inclusive of mixed race individuals\, AAPIs are the fastest growing racial/ethnic group in New York City (and the U.S.)\, currently making up a combined 11% of the city. This racial and ethnic demographic shift has been reflected at CUNY\, with an increase to 23% of students identifying as Asian. \nFor this symposium\, the Asian American / Asian Research Institute has invited students\, scholars\, community organizers\, and/or practitioners to share their innovative research and creative works\, pedagogical projects\, programmatic efforts\, and other activities that address the broad scope of “AAPI Identities\,” including: \n\nAAPI Identities through Education\nStorytelling and Research\nDiversity in the AAPI Diaspora

SUMMARY:The Bhopal Gas Disaster: Survivors Testify to 40 Years of Struggle
DESCRIPTION:Four Decades without Justice: Bhopal’s Survivors of the Union Carbide Gas Disaster SPEAK \nBhopal Gas Disaster Survivors visiting US from India will speak to us about their four decades long efforts for justice.  Bhopal gas disaster is one of the most tragic industrial accident causing catastrophic environmental and human harm.  More than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal\, India\, immediately killing at least 3\,800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. It is one of the events that is cited as the catalyst for the push for corporate accountability to human rights.   In addition to survivors\, our panel includes our very own Rebecca Bratspies and Arvind Rajagopal\, Professor of Media Studies and Sociology at NYU for a broader discussion on environmental justice and corporate accountability.
