SUMMARY:Burns Chair Events: Resistance to Autocracy During the Trump Administration
DESCRIPTION:Richard Abel\, Professor Emeritus at UCLA and 2007 Burns Chair\, will discuss resistance to autocracy during the Trump administration. \nPlease join us as Prof. Richard Abel\, Connell Distinguished Professor of Law Emeritus at UCLA and 2007 Burns Chair at CUNY Law\, discusses his three new books on resistance to autocracy during the Trump administration. During his four years as president\, Trump violated the most basic precepts of liberal democracy: seeking to overturn elections\, issuing illegal executive orders against immigrants\, corrupting the criminal justice system to protect his cronies\, and undercutting the efforts of scientific experts to control the Covid-19 pandemic. Prof. Abel’s talk\, introduced by current Burns Chair\, Vince Warren\, will discuss these abuses\, and importantly\, the forms of resistance they provoked. \nRSVP

DESCRIPTION:Paula Edgar ’06 will host an interactive workshop on building one’s personal brand to fuel a successful job search. \nWhether you’re a student studying for a professional career or a professional looking for a new opportunity\, we often doubt the credentials we have worked so hard to build. “Do I belong in this setting?” one might ask themselves\, or “can I really make the grade as a professional?” These normal feelings of self-doubt must be overcome for a job search to be as successful as possible. \nPaula Edgar is a CUNY Law alumna with experience practicing employment and workplace discrimination law. She is currently the CEO of PGE Consulting Group LLC\, a firm specializing in professional development and diversity\, equity\, and inclusion training. She hosts the Branding Room Only podcast\, dedicated to sharing career stories\, strategies\, and lessons learned on how industry leaders and influencers have built their personal brands. \nPaula will conduct an interactive workshop on how to build one’s personal brand to propel a successful job search. Guests will emerge from the workshop with tangible tools for authentic self-promotion and self-advocacy in the professional workplace. \nCUNY Law Students register through Simplicity Events \nAll others register here: \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_6NgBWA18TlyQX4Wl85zLSQ \nFood will be served!

SUMMARY:Contemplative Practice and Social Justice: Honoring MLK Jr.
DESCRIPTION:Founding faculty of the CUNY Law Contemplative program\, Family Court Judge and former CUNY Law Prof. Maria Arias\, and Dharma teacher Jeanne Anselmo\, will be co-hosting an event Thursday evening April 4\, memorializing the anniversary of the assassination of MLK Jr. \nWe will be participating in a contemplative group reading of Letters from a Birmingham Jail\, written by MLK from jail to his many supposed supporter who were telling him that now is not the time to act. His eloquent and tempered response was smuggled out of the jail in pieces and is a powerful message that a shift in power is never convenient. \nThe event will use a beautiful process called Lectio Divina (Latin for “Divine Reading”) a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading\, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with the devine and to increase the knowledge of spirituality. \nThe event will be in-person at the law school and will have a zoom link for those who cannot attend in person.

SUMMARY:DEI Campus Climate Program - "Global Dimensions of Religious Bias"
DESCRIPTION:“Global Dimensions of Religious Bias” \nProfessor David Mednicoff\, Chair of the Department of Judaic and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst\, will explore how  patterns of prejudice against religious groups\, such as anti-Semitism and Islamophobia\, are often analyzed at the national level and in terms of nation-specific politics and law. Yet the nature and spread of bias against minority religious groups in one society are affected by global political forces and groups in significant ways. This talk looks at global political drivers of anti-Semitism in the US as an example of the transnational nature of prejudice in today’s world. \n\n\n\nFood and refreshments will be provided for those that attend the entire program.
