SUMMARY:Burns Chair James Forman Jr. in Conversation with Paul Bulter\, Raj Jayadev\, and Heather Pinckney: The Role of Public Defenders
DESCRIPTION:W. Haywood Burns Chair in Human & Civil Rights\nJames Forman Jr. in Conversation\nwith Paul Butler\, Raj Jayadev\, and Heather Pinckney\nThe Role of Public Defenders \n  \nThe role of public defense comes with an inherent tension: on the one hand\, public defenders seek to challenge the system\, fighting for individual clients. On the other hand\, public defenders are necessarily part of the same system that they are working to resist. Can that tension be reconciled? \nPlease join us as W. Haywood Burns Chair in Human & Civil Rights James Forman Jr. draws from his co-edited anthology\, Dismantling Mass Incarceration: A Handbook for Change to explore the unique function of public defenders in the criminal legal system. Professor Forman will engage in a wide-ranging conversation with practitioners and academics who have thought deeply about this question: Paul Butler\, Albert Brick Professor in Law at Georgetown University Law Center\, Raj Jayadev\, co-founder of Silicon Valley De-Bug\, a community organizing\, advocacy\, and multimedia storytelling organization and author of author of the new book\, Protect Your People\, and Heather Pinckney\, Director of the Public Defender Service of the District of Colombia. \nComplimentary copies of both Dismantling Mass Incarceration: A Handbook for Change and Protect Your People will be provided to a limited number of event participants upon registration and attendance. A reception and book signing will follow the panel.

SUMMARY:From the U.S. to Brazil: Tides of Progress\, Abortion Access\, and the Law
DESCRIPTION:From the U.S. to Brazil: Tides of Progress\, Abortion Access\, and the Law\nCUNY School of Law\, Room 1/205 | October 23\, 2024 at 12:30 pm \nHosted by the Institute on Gender\, Law\, and Transformative Peace and co-sponsored by the Human Rights  & Gender Justice Clinic\, and If/When/How: Lawyers for Reproductive Justice at CUNY School of Law \nPlease join us for a lunch and moderated discussion about recent trends and setbacks in reproductive justice from around the world. Over the past three decades\, there has been an overwhelming trend toward the liberalization of abortion laws globally\, due to the advocacy of sexual and reproductive health\, rights\, and justice movements including the Green Wave across Latin America. But in recent years\, four countries have acted against these tides of progress\, instead rolling back reproductive rights and criminalizing abortion: the United States\, Nicaragua\, El Salvador\, and Poland. Other countries have been slow to expand legal protections for abortion — in Brazil\, abortion has remained a crime since the 1940 Penal Code\, and even in cases where it is legal (rape and threat to pregnant person’s life)\, it is very difficult to access. Why is abortion being criminalized in certain countries but expanded in others? What are the legal and on-the-ground realities of these comparative contexts\, and what can reproductive justice lawyers do to protect and expand access to abortion? The panel conversation will explore these questions and more from a comparative and cross-national perspective of those on the front lines.
