Develop a strong foundation in criminal procedure adjudications law.

Course Description

This course will examine the criminal adjudication process post-arrest through sentencing and appeal. The class will focus on the constitutional and statutory protections afforded to the accused in relation to the actions of prosecutors, judges, defense attorneys and jurors. The goal of the course is to gain an understanding of the core topics in criminal adjudication and to develop legal reasoning skills in this area of law. The topics covered will include initiating prosecution, bail and pre-trial release, discovery, plea bargaining, speedy trial, the right to effective assistance of counsel, the right to a jury, confrontation, sentencing, the death penalty and double jeopardy.

After spending nearly two decades as a public defender, primarily with the Bronx Defenders, Seann Riley joined Uptrust as the Director of Partnerships. Prior to The Bronx Defenders Seann was the recipient of the E. Barrett Prettyman Fellowship at the Georgetown Law Center. A graduate of Tulane Law School (JD) and Georgetown Law Center (Master of Laws), Riley holds a Masters of Social Work from the University of Michigan and a Bachelor of Arts degree in government from Georgetown University.
