Contemplative Practice and Social Justice: Honoring MLK Jr.

April 4 @ 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM EDT

Founding faculty of the CUNY Law Contemplative program, Family Court Judge and former CUNY Law Prof. Maria Arias, and Dharma teacher Jeanne Anselmo, will be co-hosting an event Thursday evening April 4, memorializing the anniversary of the assassination of MLK Jr.

We will be participating in a contemplative group reading of Letters from a Birmingham Jail, written by MLK from jail to his many supposed supporter who were telling him that now is not the time to act. His eloquent and tempered response was smuggled out of the jail in pieces and is a powerful message that a shift in power is never convenient.

The event will use a beautiful process called Lectio Divina (Latin for “Divine Reading”) a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with the devine and to increase the knowledge of spirituality.

The event will be in-person at the law school and will have a zoom link for those who cannot attend in person.
