Asima Chaudhary is an Assistant Professor of Law and the Director of the Academic Support for the 2L Evening Program at the CUNY School of Law. Asima teaches skills and lawyering seminar as well as mentors students as they prep for the bar exam. Asima also serves as a writing coach in the Pipeline to Justice Program. Asima also teaches foundational legal writing to pre-law students for the Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) Project LAW (Leadership, Achievement, and Work) in collaboration with the CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies. Her presentations include “Tales From the Epicenter: Remote Evening Academic Support in the Time of Covid” and “Best Practices for Working with Evening Students.” Her writing and teaching aim to help law students realize their potential to succeed in law school and beyond as well as tackle the challenges resulting from inequity in their prelaw education.
Prior to joining CUNY Law’s faculty, Asima was a Legal Policy Fellow with the New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) Office of the Chair. In addition to handling Source of Income discrimination complaints, she researched legal issues pertaining to discrimination in housing, education, and policing in New York City. Asima also helped coordinate the First Lady’s Faith Unity Project, Muslim Iftars as well as participated in community outreach where she informed community members of their rights under the City Human Rights Law.
Asima also worked at the Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD (OIG-NYPD) within the New York City Department of Investigation (DOI) where she worked on systematic policing reform. Before OIG-NYPD, Asima handled sexual harassment and real estate fraud cases as an associate at DNIS LLP.
Asima is a member of the New York City Bar Association, American Association of Law Schools (AALS) and Association of Academic Support Educators (AASE). Asima serves as a board member of the Association of Muslim American Lawyers and in the past, she served on the board of the South Asian Bar Association of New York.
Asima is also a proud graduate of the CUNY School of Law. In law school, she was in the Immigration and Noncitizens’ Rights Clinic and the Creating Law Enforcement Accountability and Responsibility (CLEAR) Project. Asima was also a senior staff member for CUNY Law Review.
Prior to attending law school, Asima graduated from CUNY Brooklyn College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. After graduating from Brooklyn College, Asima taught math and coached both the Mock Trial Team and the Debate Team in middle school and high school.
