David Ourlicht ’17 is one of 25 future lawyers honored in The National Jurist’s 2017 Law Students of the Year.
According to National Jurist, the students selected for this national honor, “are already looking to right wrongs and fight for society’s most vulnerable.”
The National Jurist notes that Ourlicht was a lead plaintiff in the stop-and-frisk case, Floyd et al v. City of New York et al, in which his “leadership and bravery in the Floyd Case led to real, practical and substantial changes in the lives of thousands of New Yorkers.”
I am thrilled that National Jurist has recognized David,” said CUNY Law Dean Mary Lu Bilek. “David’s commitment to justice has inspired me. He came to law school with a contextualized understanding of the way the law plays out in the real world and is committed to making sure that abstract notions of due process and black letter rules are used in practice in a way that promotes justice. I am proud that many CUNY Law students share his values and his motivation to bring justice to communities currently underrepresented in the profession.”
Participating in the landmark case inspired Ourlicht to go to law school. Participating in our Pipeline to Justice program helped him prepare for this step. At CUNY Law, he has been involved with the Black Law Students Association and Students for a Sensible Drug Policy. He has mentored and guided many of his classmates, particularly other students of color.
Ourlicht has interned with Boies, Schiller and Flexner LLP, Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem and Legal Aid Society in the Bronx. In Fall 2016, he was in the Criminal Defense Clinic and after graduation, he plans a career in public defense.
