Title IX Information

The Law School follows the tenets of Title IX, a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in programs and activities at educational institutions receiving federal funds.

We are committed to providing a safe and secure academic environment free of sexual harassment, gender-based harassment, and other forms of sexual misconduct.

We seek to create and maintain a safe environment in which all members of our campus community —students, faculty, and staff—can learn and work free from fear of sexual assault and other forms of violence. We prohibit gender-based harassment of any kind, by students, faculty, and staff. Sexual harassment includes unwelcome comments or advances, sexually suggestive written or visual communications, and inappropriate flirtations. Sexual misconduct includes sexual assault, sexual harassment (including gender-based harassment), domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, and voyeurism.

Harassing conduct, also implicated by sexual assault, domestic and intimate partner violence, or stalking on any CUNY campus, creates a “hostile environment” which, when sufficiently severe or pervasive, may limit or interfere with a student’s ability to participate in educational activities, or an employee’s ability to perform his or her job. For definitions and more details, see the CUNY Policy on Sexual Misconduct.

We comply with New York’s “Enough is Enough” law, which requires all colleges to adopt a set of comprehensive procedures and guidelines to combat sexual misconduct.

We value the privacy of our students, employees, and visitors and recognize that you should be able to seek the assistance you need without fear that the information you provide will be shared more broadly. If you speak to a CUNY employee about Sexual Misconduct you should be aware that employees fall into three categories:

Confidential Employees have an obligation to maintain a complainant’s confidentiality regarding allegations of Sexual Misconduct and will not share any identifying information with others, except as required by law in emergency circumstances;

*Responsible Employees are required to report allegations of Sexual Misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator but will protect an individual’s privacy to the greatest extent possible and share information with other staff only on a need-to-know basis; and

All other employees are strongly encouraged, but not required to report allegations of Sexual Misconduct to the Title IX Coordinator. These employees are otherwise encouraged to protect an individual’s privacy to the greatest extent possible and share information only with the Title IX Coordinator.

If you are the complainant, you may use confidential resources even if you decide not to report allegations of Sexual Misconduct or participate in an investigation, CUNY resolution process, or the criminal justice process. If you first speak to a confidential resource you may later decide to report allegations to the college or outside law enforcement.

*If you are an employee and you are unsure if you are a “responsible employee,” review CUNYs Sexual Misconduct Policy or contact the Title IX Coordinator.
