In her article “Impoverished Algorithms: Misguided Governments, Flawed Technologies, and Social Control,” for the Fordham Urban Law Journal, Prof. Sarah Valentine explores how big data analytics increases government control over those caught within the overlapping systems of criminal justice and social welfare. She posits that challenging governmental use of algorithms for social control requires understanding the fallibility of the technology, the historical and political forces driving its adoption, and the strategies that have been effective in advocating against it.
