Jumpstart your CUNY Law experience with a fun and interactive icebreaker session! This is a great chance to meet your fellow classmates, connect with administration in the room, and start building the supportive community that defines CUNY Law. Through light-hearted activities and conversation starters, you’ll get to know the faces around you—and maybe even find your first study buddy or lunch crew. No pressure, just people, purpose, and a little fun to get things rolling!

CUNY Law's Interim Dean and Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management will welcome students and highlight the values, expectations, and opportunities that will shape their legal education at CUNY Law.

Gather with your new classmates for a class photo with administration! It's a tradition you won't want to miss–smiles, spirit, and a snapshot of the start of your law school journey.

In these identity-based breakout sessions, students of color and non-traditional students (those balancing law school with full-time work, caregiving responsibilities, or entering as older students) will engage in a conversation guided by a facilitator who brings personal insight to students lived experiences. Each session is intentionally curated for its specific group, and will offer space to explore what balance, connection, and belonging can look like in law school.

In this session, you'll begin your journey of developing your professional identity in the law, which begins at orientation and continues throughout law school, clinic, and your legal career. We'll explore what it means to enter the legal profession and how the legal field compares to other professions, highlighting key similarities and differences. We'll also examine how these differences shape legal education, professional conduct, and ethical standards, including how we interact with clients, judges, adversaries, and law school staff and faculty. This session is the first in a series on Professionalism in the Legal Profession during your first year.

This panel will explore how CUNY Law alumni have built meaningful and rewarding careers across a range of legal sectors while forming lasting relationships with faculty, staff, and peers who became mentors, allies, and lifelong supporters. Join a dynamic group of alumni as they reflect on their experiences in public interest law and share their challenges and victories. They will also offer practical advice to help you navigate your journey. This conversation will highlight how building community can support both your professional growth and personal fulfillment in law school and beyond.

This session is designed for the relatives, friends, and allies of incoming 1L students. Join us for a conversation about what to expect during the law school experience, how to best support your student, and how you, too, are part of their success. We'll explore the unique challenges and milestones of legal education and offer practical tips for being a steady presence in their journey.

During orientation, students will begin one of their first-semester courses, entitled Liberty, Equality, and Due Process (“LEDP”). The Academic Skills sessions will occur before and after the LEDP classes. During these sessions, Skills professors will introduce students to critical law school skills, including case reading, case briefing, note-taking, rule synthesis, and exam writing. The Academic Skills sessions will provide an opportunity to both “pre-brief” and “debrief” the LEDP classes.

Liberty, Equality, and Due Process (LEDP) provides legal and historical perspectives by examining the law's impact on racial and gender equality and sexual orientation. This course challenges students to analyze their own experiences through the lens of the law and to understand how the law may have shaped their values and perceptions--or how it might be used to shift society's values and perceptions.

During orientation, students will begin one of their first-semester courses, entitled Liberty, Equality, and Due Process (“LEDP”). The Academic Skills sessions will occur before and after the LEDP classes. A conversation with current law students about what it’s really like to navigate law school—both in and out of the classroom. Panelists will share insights on study strategies, time management, getting involved, and building community, while also reflecting on how they’ve engaged with the school’s public interest mission through clinics, student organizations, and advocacy efforts.

Get inspired by CUNY Law’s legacy of student-led activism at Racial & Social Justice Orientation (RSJO), featuring current student organizers. You’ll be introduced to the a student-led initiatives grounded in collective liberation and community building. Panelists will share their experiences balancing law school with activism, and offer insights into how you can get involved. The program includes an open discussion, audience Q&A, and time to mingle. This allows for incoming 1Ls a chance to connect directly with RSJO members and start building community from orientation.

The key to Bar Exam success? It’s mastering your first- and second-year required courses. During this session, we will talk about what the bar exam is testing and how to develop habits that support your success through law school and on the bar exam.

In response to law school advocacy, the ABA updated Curriculum Standard 303 to require that all law schools provide education to law students on bias, cross-cultural competency, and racism as these skills are essential to the practice of law. At CUNY Law, we have long recognized that understanding the intersection of racism and social justice lawyering is a critical component of legal education.
