Afghan Refugees, Mass Deportations, and Protection Obligations
25 June 2026 | 3:00 PM CET | 9:00 AM ET | 5:30 PM Kabul Time
As mass deportations of Afghans from Iran and Pakistan continue and discussions on returns to Afghanistan gain traction in Europe, serious concerns are emerging regarding the protection of refugees and compliance with international refugee and human rights law. Millions of Afghans have already been returned to a country where the de facto leadership has been charged with crimes against humanity, including gender persecution, and many are at risk of a range of serious human rights violations.
This webinar will examine recent deportations and return policies, the protection risks faced by returnees, challenges confronting Afghan refugees and asylum seekers, and the obligations of states and the international community to uphold refugee protections.
The webinar will feature remarks and interventions from:
- Richard Bennett, UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Afghanistan
- Dorothy Estrada-Tanck, Professor of International Law, University of Murcia, and Member of the UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls
- Samira Hamidi, Regional Campaigner, Amnesty International
- Khadija Haidari, journalist and human rights defender
- Reshad Jalali, Senior Policy Officer, ECRE
