This Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program presents an overview of the two federal long-term disability benefit programs administered under the Social Security Administration (SSA): Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). This CLE will discuss the major differences between SSI and SSDI and review basic eligibility requirements for each program. We will review the entire complex process through initial application, the layers of internal appeals, and the administrative law judge (ALJ) hearing. Attendees will learn about SSA regulations, best practice tips, and practical guidance for issues that arise when a client wins this potentially life-changing benefit. You will leave this CLE with real-world strategies for assisting clients in navigating this confusing administrative system and the interplay between federal and NYS benefits.
