Professor Rebecca Bratspies, founding Director of the Center for Urban Environmental Reform (CUER) has been recognized for her contributions to key topics in international law at the intersection of human rights, climate change, natural resources, and health by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) Human Rights Programme.

Professor Bratspies has been named the 2022 International Legal Specialist for Human Rights, part of the CISDL’s annual recognition of the legal work of innovators advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The award acknowledges her serious, significant, and long-standing commitment to advancing peace, justice, and sustainable development in the world.

“The Centre for International Sustainable Development Law is a thought leader in the emerging discourse about human rights and the environment. Its global network connects scholars and lawmakers working to build a greener, more equitable world in which no communities are treated as sacrifice zones. In doing so, the Centre models the kind of engaged, justice-oriented scholarship that I believe makes a difference in the world. The list of past honorees reads like a Who’s Who of international environmental justice.  I am deeply honored to have my name included among theirs,” states Professor Bratspies.

An internationally recognized expert on environmental justice and the human right to a healthy environment, Professor Bratspies has written scores of law review articles, op-eds, and other publications including five books. Her co-authored textbook Environmental Justice: Law Policy and Regulation is used in schools across the country. Bratspies is perhaps best known for her environmentally-themed comic books Mayah’s Lot, Bina’s Plant, and Troops Run, made in collaboration with artist Charlie LaGreca-Velasco, that have brought environmental literacy to the next generation of environmental leaders.

The CISDL is an independent legal research institute that integrates environmental law, human rights, and sustainable development law. It does so through legal scholarship and empowerment in collaboration with their global network of partnerships across institutes, universities, inter-governmental agencies, judiciaries, civil societies, and professional and legal experts.
