A Vision that Endures
The Burns Program honors W. Haywood Burns, a people’s lawyer, professor, civil rights activist, and former dean of CUNY School of Law who helped create a new model of legal education focused on training lawyers dedicated to the public good.
Program overview
Law as a tool for change
Inspired by Haywood Burns’ legacy, the Burns Program is grounded in the belief that law is a tool that can be used to help build a more just and equal future. Each academic year, we adopt a specific theme drawn from Haywood Burns’ work and host a prominent practitioner scholar who has made significant contributions in relation to that theme. We host events, convenings, and a seminar related to the year’s theme, as well as events that are responsive to emergent issues. Building on Haywood Burns’ commitment to mentorship and his focus on developing attorneys committed to social justice, the Burns Program provides support to students preparing to embark on careers as public interest and movement lawyers.
